New
Orleans Cemeteries: New Orleans cemeteries are unique. Although our New Orleans cemeteries
are similar to those in places like Paris and Mexico City, they are different. The tombs and
wall vaults in New Orleans cemeteries are actual resting places of remains. The structures in
other cemeteries are usually memorials with remains interred in crypts below ground.
Some frequently asked questions are: "How do you manage numerous burials
in one tomb?" Sorry, we won’t tell all of our secrets about our New Orleans cemeteries.
You’ll have to come and see for yourself on one of our New
Orleans Cemetery Tours. "Are there still
tombs
for sale in these cemeteries?" Yes and no. "Is this cemetery filled?" In New
Orleans cemetaries there’s always room for one more.
The first of our New Orleans cemeteries was the St. Peter Cemetery on St.
Peter and Burgundy Streets in the French
Quarter. Burials in St. Peter began in 1721 and continued until 1800. Burials were below
ground.
St. Louis Cemetery #1, commissioned in 1789, marked the beginning of above
ground burial in New Orleans. St. Louis #2 and St. Louis #3 followed as the city continued to
grow. Lafayette #1 Cemetery was
laid out in 1833.
New Orleans cemetery tours are $10.00. Special rates for school groups.
